Registration Deadline Nears for
Second Annual Cummins Run
Anyone who would like to pre-register for the second annual Cummins
Run for Literacy in order to guarantee a particular T-shirt size must do so by
Friday, May 2.
The registration fee of $15 includes a T-shirt, but some sizes may
not be available for those who sign up later.
The 5K event, sponsored by Cummins Inc., Jamestown Engine Plant,
will take place on Saturday, May 10, to benefit the Prendergast Library Literacy
Center.
Runners will begin at 9 a.m. with walkers following five minutes
later.
“It is a pleasure to be the event’s sponsor for a second year,” said
Angie Peck, community involvement leader and communications coordinator at
Cummins Inc., Jamestown Engine Plant.
“As a major employer in the Jamestown area, Cummins recognizes the
importance of strong literacy skills,” she said.
In 2007, the race was suggested by Elliot Raimondo, then a Jamestown
High School senior, who wanted to do something positive for his community before
he went away to college. He and his classmate Ed Sundquist were instrumental in
making the event a success, said Prendergast Library Director Catherine Way.
Ms. Way said she is very pleased to have Cummins continue its
support of an event that benefits the Library Literacy Center, which trains
volunteer tutors and matches them with adult learners to work on basic reading,
math, and English as a second language.
“There is a great need for the services of the Library Literacy
Center, and we appreciate Cummins’ assistance,” she said.
The race begins and ends at the library at 509 Cherry St.,
Jamestown. Competitors will go down Fifth Street, along Prendergast Avenue, into
and around Lakeview Cemetery, and back down Prendergast Avenue to Sixth Street.
Onsite registration and packet pickup will take place between 8 and
8:45 a.m. the morning of the race in the library yard on Fifth Street or in the
Fireplace Room, in case of rain.
Miles of Smiles will provide timing for the event.
There will be awards for Overall Top Male and Female runner, and
Male and Female first, second and third place in each age group: 14 and under,
15-20, 21-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and over. Awards will be also
given to walkers.
Restrooms and changing areas are available inside the library, and
refreshments will be provided after the race.
Parking is available in the library parking lot, adjacent
parking ramp and on nearby streets.
Registration forms and route maps are available at the library or
online. Forms and checks, made payable to James Prendergast Library, are to be
sent to Cummins Run for Literacy, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown, N.Y., 14701. People
may volunteer to help at the event, and donations are welcome.
