| JAMESTOWN – After Lunch Movies @ the Library
will offer children and their parents or caregivers the opportunity to
watch three classic movies at Prendergast Library during August. The Secret Garden will be shown at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, followed by The Borrowers at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, and Black Beauty at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. The film showings, held in the library’s Fireplace Room, are free and open to the public. The Secret Garden, based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel, stars Kate Maberly, Heydon Prowse, Andrew Knott and Maggie Smith. It is the story of a 10-year-old orphan who restores an abandoned garden in her uncle’s Victorian manor. The film runs 102 minutes and is rated G. The “Borrowers” are four-inch high people who live under the floorboards. When the owner of the house they live in dies and evil realtor Ocious Potter wants to destroy the house to build luxury apartments on its place, they start to fight him with the help of the son of house owner, Pete. The Borrowers, based on Mary Norton’s novels, is rated PG and runs 83 minutes. The cast includes John Goodman, Jim Broadbent and Hugh Laurie. Black Beauty is based on the beloved novels by Anna Sewall and stars Mark Lester, Walter Slezak, Peter Lee Lawrence and Ursula Glas. It is the story of the adventures and misadventures of a horse that is separated from its original owners and a young boy who longs to be reunited with his beloved horse. It runs for 106 minutes and is rated G. The children’s book-based films are a new facet of the library’s Summer Reading Club. In September, the library will continue its adult film series with 39 Steps. The “classic mystery” film is based on The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan. The library will show the movie, which runs for 86 minutes and is unrated, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. The film showings are supported by a Community Service Grant from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation through a project called Talk To Me About Books.
