K-12 Poetry Contest Submissions Due May 17

We are looking for student poets!
The contest is for grades K-12 - Submissions due May 17, 2024.
This summer, the Prendergast Library will expand its outdoor area to create a Teaching Garden that wraps around the historic building. The garden will feature a Poetry walk consisting of five educational sign stations displaying eight poems selected from the Poetry Contest applicants.
Theme:
Nature in My Neighborhood: Write a poem that captures the magic of nature and how it makes you feel. Poems must be 20 lines or fewer and focus on the natural world.
Guidelines:
Submit your poem online using the form below, or bring two copies to the library. The library will provide a form with your name, grade, and contact information if that you can fill out when you submit your poems in person. A maximum of two poems per author may be submitted.

Prizes:
The winning poems will be printed and displayed on signs around the Prendergast Library’s new gardens as part of our new Poetry Walk. Winning poets will be honored at the Poetry Walk’s unveiling during the library Block Party on June 29th. In addition, all chosen poets will receive a certificate for the library’s Booksale and a special gift.
All submitted poems, as deemed appropriate by the Prendergast Library, will be featured on the library’s website.
Information for Students
This Poetry Walk Contest is open to students in grades K-12. Submitting students must attend Jamestown Public Schools or reside in the Jamestown Public School District.
Two winners will be selected from each of the following grade groups: K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th. Poems must be 20 lines or fewer and focus on the natural world.
Submitted poems must be original works written by an individual author. A maximum of two poems per author may be submitted.

Information for Teachers
We encourage educators to use the Poetry Walk Contest in their curriculum.
Teachers may submit poems for their class or individual students via email or at the library’s front desk. Email poems to jchamp@prendergastlibrary.org.
Teachers emailing poems should scan all the poems into a single PDF document and include their contact information and school name in the body of their email. Teachers bringing poems to the library will fill out a teacher submission form at the library’s front desk.
Please ensure that all poems have the student’s name and grade printed on them before submitting poems.
